SE4: Policy: What Do Scientists Need To Get Involved With Policy?
We want to install a meaningful dialogue between scientists and policymakers at European and national levels for effective, evidence-based decisions. But what do scientists need to know, and what skills are useful to engage with policymakers? From the pitfalls of the linear model of scientific knowledge, to the four main roles a scientist can play, this panel wants to present and discuss tools for scientists who want to make an impact at the policymaking level, like the Science4Policy Competence Framework developed by the EU Joint Research Centre. This panel will also collect feedback from the community, which together with inputs from FEMS Delegates, will help define the scientific priorities which FEMS will pursue for creating an impact in policymaking.

SE5: Highlights from the European Academy of Microbiology
This symposium will be chaired by the current President of the European Academy of Microbiology (EAM) and aims to highlight the science of four recently elected EAM Fellows, this time from Slovenia, Israel, France, and Hungary. It will cover aspects of fundamental molecular biology of bacteria, the hunt for new bacteriophages, the characterization of giant viruses of eukaryotes, and new insights into evolutionary processes of microbes.
